The full list of organizations is available on the campaign website hosted at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.accessnow.org\/keepiton\/\" target=\"_blank\">Access Now<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Internet shutdowns hamper the freedom of expression and access to public\u00a0information. Since an informed public is essential to democracy, shutting down the internet goes against open government.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The #KeepitOn campaign aims to bring together voices from across the globe to push back on internet shutdowns at every level, from governments to telcos to tech companies to everyday internet users. It began with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.accessnow.org\/no-internet-shutdowns-lets-keepiton\/\"><span class=\"s2\">adoption of an international definition of internet shutdowns<\/span><\/a> at RightsCon Silicon Valley. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Among other targets, the campaign will challenge service providers to fight back against government shutdown requests; highlight the use of shutdowns during elections; and build consensus at the U.N. and other intergovernmental organizations that people have a basic right to access information and speak freely online.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><b><\/b><span class=\"s1\">The campaign website will feature a way for people around the world to securely and safely report shutdowns in order to gather critical information about how they\u2019re being implemented and why.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The launch of #KeepitOn follows a <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DynResearch\/status\/740524048627707905\"><span class=\"s2\">recent shutdown in Iraq<\/span><\/a> &#8212; the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/technology\/archive\/2016\/05\/iraq-shut-down-its-internet-to-prevent-sixth-graders-from-cheating\/482946\/\"><span class=\"s2\">third in a month<\/span><\/a> &#8212; to prevent cheating during school exams, as well as the recent <a href=\"http:\/\/citifmonline.com\/2016\/05\/26\/ppolice-to-shut-down-social-media-on-election-day\/\"><span class=\"s2\">announcement in Ghana<\/span><\/a> that the police are considering blocking social media during upcoming elections in November 2016. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.accessnow.org\/keepiton\/\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-4766\" src=\"http:\/\/openstate.mu.openstate.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2016\/06\/Screen-Shot-2016-06-13-at-12.08.28.png\" alt=\"keepiton\" width=\"100%\" srcset=\"https:\/\/openstate.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2016\/06\/Screen-Shot-2016-06-13-at-12.08.28.png 1982w, https:\/\/openstate.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2016\/06\/Screen-Shot-2016-06-13-at-12.08.28-620x161.png 620w, https:\/\/openstate.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/14\/2016\/06\/Screen-Shot-2016-06-13-at-12.08.28-660x171.png 660w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1982px) 100vw, 1982px\" \/><\/a><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Open State Foundation\u00a0joined nearly 70 organizations from five continents in launching the #KeepitOn campaign to fight internet shutdowns worldwide.
